All you need to know about Anchor Winches

So, you’re looking to purchase an Anchor Winch?

Well, you’ve come to the right place. Here at Trev Terry Marine, it’s our bread and butter when it comes to supplying and installing this piece of boating ingenuity onto your boat.

We’ve got two leading brands that are popular in the market, the international award-winning Savwinch series, and your local Maxwell winches. Choosing which one is right for you depends on various factors, including the vessel size, displacement, windage, anchor size and rode selection. Don’t forget that each brand shares its unique qualities and characteristics that enable this gadget to perform at its best.

Here’s a rundown on both brands:

Savwinch: The Savwinch range hails from our neighbors over the shore, with over a decade of in-house engineering and design that specializes in manufacturing drum winches for the harsh marine conditions.

Key features include:

  • oversized worm drive gearboxes
  • IP68 rated marine grade motor
  • Injection mould means no air inside motor for condensation to form
  • Emergency manual release

The Savwinch series has three known models, the Classic Series (CS), Signature Series ( SS), and the Stainless Steel Series (SSS). The Signature Series being our most favourite within the range. It features a 316 stainless steel motor, a double marine grade powder coated aluminium gearbox, and a stainless steel drum. As with all winches, the Signature Series is IP68 rated and features a patented injection mould which fills all of the air pockets inside the motor. The motor is a solid black stainless steel motor ( no covers/ sleeves over the motor ) which combined with the injection mould ensures no moisture or condensation can get inside the motor.

On the other side of the spectrum, we have the Maxwell range of winches, a household name in New Zealand with over 50 years’ experience in the business. They too specialize in manufacturing quality drum winches but gained recognition for developing automatic rope/chain windlasses to the global marine market during the mid-1990s. These were revolutionary in design and the technical capabilities proved to be lightwork for boaties. Maxwell continues to evolve its existing range of proven windlasses and capstans to this day.

Savwinch Signature “Stainless Steel Motor” series – featuring 20% more power and speed.

Our international award winning Drum Winches feature specifically designed marine graded patented motors and oversized Worm Drive Gearboxes and are IP68 rated to suit even the harshest environment. The motors can be moved into 12 different positions to ensure that each Drum Winch can be installed on almost any vessel. Paired with our EFF Electronic Fast Fall System our Drum Winches can reach speeds of over 100m per minute.

The Signature Series (SS) features a complete stainless steel motor,  designed locally and exclusively for Savwinch. Machined to fine tolerances and utilising O ring seals, the SS series motors are completely submersible without the use of sealants or glues. You no longer need to be concerned about water ingress or corrosion. The 880 SS package includes 65m of 6mm double braid rope + 6m chain and is suitable for boats up to 5.5m (18ft).
