Taupo Fishing report
FLY AND GUN
Fishing on the lake the last few days has been very good especially for the Downriggers and jiggers as the fish are now well and truly situated at and below the thermocline during the main part of the day.
120 to 150 feet seems to be the depth most people are targeting, Some better quality fish are now starting to appear in the frame compared to the many poorer conditioned fish of a few weeks ago, it’s been suggested that fish are simply late putting on condition and that our best fishing on the lake is still yet to come, let’s hope so.
Fly fishing has been quite simply outstanding this year on the Cicada and if results from this last week are anything to go by it just seems to be getting better it’s been a whole summer of dry fly magic this year even on our local rivers many fish have entered the rivers to take relief from the warming lake temperatures and have been smashing Cicadas all day long.
It really doesn’t get much better than this, we have the Lace Moth hatch just around the corner so hopefully the dry fly action will extend right out till April.
The river mouths have all been having some bonanza fishing this summer as good numbers of Browns and Rainbows have gathered to smelt in the cooler water flowing in to the lake,
Quite a few poorer mending fish getting caught at the river mouth amongst some corkers, but good sport all the same.
