Taupo Fishing Report
FLY AND GUN
Fishing out on the great lake has been good this last week or so with quite a few hardy souls getting up at the crack of dawn to enjoy some early season Harling.
Good numbers and quality fish are showing up at around the 5-7 meter mark in the mornings, Green Orbit, Rabbits, Parsons Glory and Ginger Mick have all been successful flies this week.
Trolling has been quite mixed with the ever changing winds at the moment but those prepared to keep moving and chopping and changing fishing depths have been rewarded with some good fishing.
A mixed bag quality wise but no more than expected for this time of year.
The local fly fishing is having a bit of late burst of activity as good numbers of fish can now be found in most of our local rivers, better late than never as they say.
Quite a few mending fish now returning back down river as well so the all of a sudden there are good numbers of mixed fresh and dark fish.
Naturals in #14 and #16 are now the go as the water levels are getting lower and the rivers becoming clearer , you may also have to step down leader diameter as well as the fish start to get a bit selective in more challenging conditions.
Many of us will now be planning our trips for the start of the new season I hope we don’t get to much in the way of prolonged rain fall between now and October as the rivers should be in tip top order for October 1st, be aware that some waters don’t open until December 1st it’s up to you to check the regulations on the area you intend to fish.
If you want some serious quality fly fishing entertainment then don’t forget the Rise fly fishing film festival comes to Taupo on September 14th from 8pm till 10pm tickets online at www.gin-clear.com a great evening and sure to get you fired up for our season start on Oct 1st
Fish and Game National licences are now available both online or from the shop
