Here at Trev Terry Marine we are proud to be Platinum Partners of Legasea

LegaSea is a nonprofit organisation devoted to restoring the quantity, biodiversity, and health of the marine environment in New Zealand.

We firmly believe in the future of fisheries management, which is why we support this fantastic cause wholeheartedly. We have provided a brief summary of their Manifesto.

In case you weren’t aware, Legasea has excellent policies that they are working to implement, beginning with the creation of a Royal Commission to investigate fisheries management and a mechanism for quota management.

Not only will it aid the ocean’s species, but it will also help replenish the labour force that was depleted after the fisheries were taken over by fewer, larger firms over 30 years ago, which led to the loss of several jobs.

Following the Fisheries Act, consequences will be put into place that will include the Allocation Principle, which states that excessive fishing from commercial vessels will result in better stock levels.

Different industrial techniques, including as trawling, Danish fishing, and dredging, have been eliminated from the in-shore zone. Over time, these techniques have devastated the benthic (seabed) floor, causing it to move farther offshore with each pass of the fishing gear.

The MPI’s current management, which considers fisheries more as farmed stock than as an unique category of wild stock, will be best replaced by the establishment of a tiny, tightly focused Ministry of Fisheries.

As examples from other nations have shown how difficult it is to manage numbers, maintaining it above 50% unfished creates a far better yield for a healthy ecosystem. Therefore, the Fisheries Act should be amended to increase the “Maximum Sustainable Yield” to be above 50% of unfished Biomass.

Success will be achieved with the widespread public support and understanding for policy and fisheries management reform, and by minimising the environmental impacts of fishing.

We are proud to be a Platinum supporter of LegaSea who are ensuring our marine environment is managed in a sustainable way, leading to more abundant and healthier sea life.
