Words from the wise, Floyd the owner of Trophy Lures gave me abit of a run down on these awesome hand crafted game lures made in Waihau Bay.

The smaller lures in the range, tend to work well on the Southern Blue Fin Tuna this time of the year. Run them longer than normal. Slow down to 6 to 6.5 knots trowling. Run a teaser or daisy chains to increase your odds.

Marlin are generally more attracted to the bigger lures. Though with Yellowfin Tuna, Mahimahi, Shortbill Spearfish around a varied size selection is advised.

Southern Blue Fin Tuna generally run from the beginning of April for around 8 weeks in Kaikoura, then travel north. The Blue fin are in Tora, South Wairarapa and Napier now. Then in Waihau Bay June, July then headed up past Tauranga, Whitianga.

There is the majority of these Lures most smaller being named after boats in and around the Waihau Bay area, having seen these so often I suppose Floyd would have been inspired by these boats.

For example a great friend of Floyd’s Greg, his boat was the namesake of the Blue Leda.

A number of other lures being named after different fish such as the Gladiator after the sword fish.
