Find out how Graeme and his team started out in the industry of ski racing.

Graeme’s involvement with the NZ Water Ski Racing Association began in 2016 when he was providing “on-water” paramedic services for them, and most race weekends his kids attended alongside. Graeme’s son, Kieran, said “Dad, I would like to give ski racing a go” which was quickly followed by his younger sister, Kaitlin, race skiing as well. They have both gone on to win several series round races and gain several places and both Kieran and Kaitlin have previously placed second at the National Champs, with Kieran also being selected in the NZ team to represent NZ and the Trans-Tasman water ski race event against the Victoria team in Australia, where he got second.

As the kids got more involved in the sport, it was a good opportunity to purchase a race boat, sit his race driver’s exam and test, then he would be able to tow the kids. It is great that within the sport there are a lot of families where Mum or Dad drive and observe towing their kids.

The Harvey family compete at both the series rounds, which are held on lakes, river races like the Bridge to Bridge in Hamilton where boats and skiers race from Cambridge, through Hamilton to Taupiri, then back to Hamilton – 80kms in distance. They also compete in a series round down in Wellington as well.

The race team is made up of Graeme as the driver, Kaitlin skies in the U13 class, Kieran skies in the U16 class, and we also have Amos Ratuki who joins Kieran as his ski partner as a 2-up team for the river races and Oakley Plasmeyer who joins the team as a U19 skier for the series rounds. Observers, who sit facing backwards in the boat watching the skiers are Scott Ratuki, Amelia Ward & Ben “Chop” Taylor. Unfortunately for the Bridge to Bridge ski race Kieran had to pull out injured, but the team was well represented with Amos and skiing beside him is an U13 skier is Curtis Carne, a selected skier from Victoria in Australia and his dad, Adam will be observing, so they will be very much an international team.
