Waitahanui Anglers Improvement Association club weekend

Held July 28th-30th 2023

Once again in the depths of winter, the last weekend of July 28-30th brought together the hardy locals and fellow fisher people to support the local Waitahanui region with the WAIA annual AGM and fishing club.

The usual Friday banter and acceptance of yearly cups saw a small crew gather at the New Windsor Lodge to drink a few beers, a wee catch up for those who travelled from afar and to find out the final details before the starting of the competition.

Saturday itself saw great weather conditions for both lake and river fishing allowing entrants to source their best option for entry into the competition. Lake conditions especially had not been seen like this for numerous months and was enjoyed by all out there. A wee hick up on the road didn’t deter the early bird river goers but did cause the remaining Sunday chilly bin reserves to disappear in the early afternoon as the entrants traded stories before the road opened to let them home.

Weighing in saw a good number of fish, both lake and river, however the road closure did see the fisher person numbers down a little from previous years. After the initial numbers came in it seemed the condition factor ( the main prize decider ) was also down on previous years. Despite this Saturday saw 24 odd fish weighed in.

The weather continued to hold in spectacular fashion for the Sunday session and due to the travel time for some people it’s really only half a day of fishing, however 21 fish were still weighed in. A smashing feed and some good banter led to the prize giving where everyone who weighed a fish received a gift / prize of some sort. A great thanks to all the sponsors who contributed and supported this smallish event were dutifully noted and things wrapped up to allow those who needed to get on their way.

All and all a successful weekend with any and all proceeds from the club membership and raffle heading back into the community with a working B designated for later on in the year to do some work around the Waitahanui river. To all those involved, in organising and being a part of the weekend, thanks.

A special thanks goes out to the ongoing support from,

Trev Terry, Category 3, Waitahanui lodge, Kilwel, Drop zone, Incredible India, Total Oils, Pat swift flies, Masport, Lubricant NZ.
